Online retailer Shein has catapulted to the top of fast fashion — but not without controversy

Online retailer Shein has become well-known for its massive inventory of trendy clothing produced and sold to consumers on the cheap.

In just a few short years, the company catapulted to the top of the fast fashion world by harnessing influencer culture and outperforming rivals – all while staying secretive about their operations.

“This company just seemed to kind of come out of nowhere. There are so many fashion companies out there. But we’ve never really seen one grow this quickly and take this much market share as quickly as Shein did,” said Elizabeth Cline, author of “Overdressed” and “The Conscious Closet.”

It’s now the most-visited clothing website in the world, with customers spending twice as much time on the site than Nike.com, which is the next most popular site, according to Similarweb Digital Data.

Slow fashion movement picks up pace in SLO

Grace Longo sits up on their couch with a heap of yarn on their lap. Dark black goggle-like glasses covered their eyes as a bunny balaclava began to take shape from their fiddling needles.

Longo was crocheting, and had been for hours.

“I would pick it up, get it all tied into a knot, then throw it away, then pick it up another three months later,” Longo said.

Three days and one sleepless night later, Longo’s unique headwear was done and, just like that, all the long knots full of hours of frustration and desire were worth it.

“I wanted to be able to make things that I couldn’t buy,” Longo said. “Or ideas that I had, I wanted to bring them to fruition.”

Longo had created something unique for them, and it felt amazing, they said.

According to an article published by BBC, crocheting is a popular creative hobby these days, regaining popularity during the pandemic. With a push for more sustainable and conscious practices, the hobby falls into a bigger scheme, the “slow fashion” movement. At Cal Poly, the movement takes its shape in the form of communities working to lead their lives according to the movement’s core

Bronx block party celebrates 50 years of hip-hop

A massive block party outside 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in Morris Heights, which is considered the “birthplace of hip-hop,” closed off many Bronx blocks to car traffic Saturday.

There was plenty of room for generations of hip-hop fans to dance and reflect on an art that originated there 50 years ago.

“These are my people,” said Crystal Rose, who lives nearby. “All these are my people. I was brought up in hip-hop.”

Much like hip-hop itself, lifelong Bronx residents Juliet Lindsay, Deborah Matthews and Rose were all born and bred in the borough where hip-hop originated.

“I grew up in this neighborhood, so I remember when there were parties here at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue,” Lindsay, a Morris Heights resident, said. “I actually knew who [DJ Kool Herc] was. I knew his sister. So this is like really epic for this type of event to happen in our neighborhood.”

“I was here when hip-hop started,” Matthews, a Tremont resident, added. “It was different and it was innovative. And nobody understood it but us. So it was great.”

The block party on Saturday was inclusive, bringing together hip-hop fans from countries as far away as Germany and neighborhoods as close as Queens.

Discover what are the most sustainable fashion capitals

London and New York, Berlin and Copenhagen can be considered among the most eco-conscious global fashion capitals according to a ranking compiled by Arka, a US packaging specialist.

The statistics were filed collecting various data including thrift store counts, search interest in sustainable fashion, and key metrics like sustainability and recycling rates across 22 worldwide fashion capitals.

Each city was assigned a score according to a calculation that includes the number of thrift shops, searches for thrift stores, searches for sustainable clothing upon a scale from 0 to 100 for each city. Then these numbers were added to the city’s sustainability rate and recycling rate percentages to get a final score.

London tops the list as the biggest sustainable fashion hub with an index score of 309.47. Being a home to 200 thrift stores and significant online interest in sustainable clothing for search terms like “thrift stores” or “sustainable fashion”, it shows a growing tendency towards second-hand fashion. London’s notable sustainability rate of 81.65% and a high recycling rate further secure the city’s position in the ranking with the highest total index of 337.43.

Hottest New Men’s Fashion Statement: Brightly Patterned Socks

— — Practical and predictable as gifts, socks have the misfortune of being stuffed way under the tree and deliberately left off many wish lists.

That was until a footwear revolution, of paisley, pastel and polka-dotted hosiery started appearing on the ankles of American men.

This year, the nearly $6 billion sock industry will be front and center for gift exchanges, thanks to a fashion sock boom.

Just ask GQ.

“Socks are a very good intro for a guy who is just deciding I want to be more stylish,” says GQ style writer, Jake Woolf.

So, why socks? As a man comfortably perched on nearly every best-dressed list, Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade has the answer.

“Why not socks?… You get to see that tiny glimpse of a pattern or a design or a color that they (men) have on their totally different then their suit at that moment it gives me something about that person.”

And Wade is helping guys share a little about themselves, with now his third collection of socks with Stance Socks.

Snoop Dog, as well, is capturing some of the sock industry’s double-digit sales growth; he is teaming up with Sweden’s, Happy Socks, for a sock
