Miami Beach cracks down on Spring Break party excess

College students usually turn Miami Beach’s main drag into a huge street party at this time of year — blocking traffic as they drink and dance to thumping reggaeton music.

But strict new measures mean the American ritual, known as Spring Break, is a much quieter affair this year.

The city in south Florida is enacting rules to stamp out partying which has gotten out of control — and even violent — in recent years, with two killed in shootings last March.

As the sun went down on the weekend, Ocean Drive — typically the party hub for the thousands who descend on Miami Beach — looked much calmer than normal.

The booming music, crowds of scantily-clad youngsters and the occasional whiff of marijuana smoke were all gone from the city’s iconic avenue with its distinctive Art Deco buildings.

Like Miami Beach, many seaside cities in south Florida are magnets for students keen to let off steam during their Easter break.

But now, to keep things under control, Miami Beach officials have deployed more police, set up extra drink-driving checkpoints and shut down all public parking lots except one which charges $100 on the busiest weekends of the Spring Break

Vanity Fair Party Designers Tease What to Expect

This year’s Vanity Fair Oscar party will mark the hot-ticket soiree’s 30thth anniversary.

While the magazine is keeping tight-lipped on what exactly is planned to commemorate the milestone (because editor-in-chief Radhika Jones wants the VIP guests surprised), it’s no secret that the dinner and after-party will, for the ninth consecutive year , take place in a custom-built venue on the grounds of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. Construction takes about three weeks with an additional week dedicated to taking it all down.

Variety caught up with the party’s longtime architect Basil Walter and his first-time collaborator, creative director and designer Will Cooper, to talk about the four-month process of designing, planning and building this year’s bash.

What did Radhika Jones say to you about what she envisioned for this year’s party, especially since it’s the 30thth anniversary?

Walter: It was just a notion of, ‘How do we make it different. How do we change it?’ And I think bringing in Will as someone who hasn’t participated in it, there’s always an opportunity for freshness when you get a new set of eyes on something.

Will, what was it like getting the offer

Designer re-creates party dress made for Lady Diana

LONDON — This is a dress with a story, and Elizabeth Emanuel wants to tell it.

Shocking pink with a plunging, ruffled neckline and body-hugging shape, the gown was designed by Emanuel for Lady Diana Spencer to wear at a Buckingham Palace party a few days before her marriage to Prince Charles in 1981. It was a visual coming-out event for the future princess, until then largely known for her conservative sweater-and-pearls look.

“This was definitely not a wallflower dress,” said Emanuel, who also co-designed Diana’s wedding gown. “This was a dress to be seen in and celebrated.”

It was also soon forgotten. In an era before smartphones put a camera in everyone’s pocket and social media made private events public, the dress was mostly seen by the party guests, including Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Grace and Nancy Reagan, but no one else. Emanuel doesn’t know where it is, or even if it still exists.

So she has re-created it, out of bolts of shiny, satin taffeta cut and stitched to match the dramatic sketches she made more than 40 years ago.

Acting on an idea that took shape during Britain’s long coronavirus lockdowns, she did it for herself, for

Tea party-style protests break out across the country against stay-at-home orders

Across the nation, protests against the stay-at-home orders that health experts say are needed to save lives are taking place, with more set for the coming days.

This week, about 100 protesters gathered outside the Ohio statehouse in Columbus to push for Republican Gov. Mike DeWine to reopen the state. In Raleigh, more than 100 demonstrators gathered to protest Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s stay-at-home order, where at least one protester was charged with violating the order. In New York, a few dozen people gathered Thursday outside the state Capitol in Albany to rally for a return to normal. Kentucky, Utah and Wyoming also saw similar protests.

More events are scheduled for Pennsylvania, Virginia, Texas, Oregon, Idaho and Washington state.

The largest took place in Michigan on Thursday, where police said 3,000 to 4,000 people showed up at the state Capitol in Lansing to protest Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s extended and expanded stay-at-home order, which was signed into law last week.

Asked about the protests at his press conference Thursday, one in which he unveiled his administration’s guidelines for reopening, President Donald Trump said he believed the demonstrators would listen to him and added there is no daylight

Cara Delevingne reveals her perfect Christmas party outfit

Jimmy Choo

Cara Delevingne probably isn’t short of social invites when it comes to the festive season, so she’s well placed to share her thoughts on what makes a great Christmas party look.

Talking as part of her role as Jimmy Choo’s new cruise campaign star, she says that maximalism is key when it comes to festive dressing.

“Glitter, sparkles, a feather boa if you’re interested,” she says. “Obviously, a Santa hat or funny glasses. I like a good outfit change, so if you have a little Santa bag stockpiled with different outfits which you can put on and swap with people, I think that’s fun.”

The model-cum-actress-cum-activist says that this is the time of year when you should forget about looking chic or wearing anything understated. Embrace the sartorial fun that the festive season involves, even Christmas jumpers.

Party of light and music opens Birmingham Commonwealth Games

The Australian team was the first to march into the arena in a Commonwealth Games opening ceremony bursting with light, colour, music and dancing this morning.

More than 200 Aussie athletes from the 750 strong team of competitors and officials marched into Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium in a party-like start to the 12-day sporting spectacular.

They were led by flag-bearers Rachael Grinham, who will represent Australia in squash, and our men’s hockey captain, Eddie Ockenden.

British music, including from Harry Styles, One Direction and the Spice Girls, played throughout the stadium during the parade of nations, with home team England marching in to Queen’s We Will Rock You.

Musical performances and dancing were a big part of the opening ceremony, which also featured a mechanical bull, hot air balloon and classic cars that formed the British flag in the center of the arena – all representing Birmingham’s rich history and culture.

Prince Charles made an entrance James Bond would be proud of, driving into the stadium in a 1969 Aston Martin to officially open the games.

The heir to the throne read a message from his mother, the Queen: “Over the years, the coming together of so many for the friendly
